A leader who can’t be comfortable with praise singers.
A leader who is troubled by the cry of poverty-ridden Nigerians.
A leader who can raise our hope once again in our battered country.

Dangote reveals his company lost N50 billion to ‘flexible exchange’ policy

Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote said at the weekend that his company lost N50 billion to the flexible foreign exchange policy.
Dangote spoke when Vice President Yemi Osinbajo toured the project sites of Dangote Fertiliser and Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos.
Dangote said the $161 million his companies bought during that period from the CBN merely reflected the size of his business and did not represent preferential treatment.He said

“We have been badly affected like any other company,” he said, arguing that operational costs totalled $100 million each month due to recurring expenses, such as the purchase of parts for cement production and running a fleet of 9,000 trucks.“When you are talking about 20 billion dollars worth of projects, what is 161 million? One-hundred-and-sixty-one million dollars is what I need in just six weeks,” he said.
“This week (last week), the Central Bank removed the peg that has held the naira at the official rate of 197 for the last 16 months, leading to a 30 per cent devaluation as the currency traded freely on the interbank market.”
 “This devaluation alone, we have lost over 50 billion naira ($176 million),” he said.“The gas, which is our main source of power, is priced in dollars. If there is 40 per cent devaluation, your price will go up by 40 per cent. Every single aspect of the production will go up by that percentage,” he said.

‎Benue woman beats husband to death for cheating on her

A lecturer in the Theatre Arts Department of the College of Education Oju in Benue State, Godwin Abuul, has been allegedly murdered by his wife for cheating on her. ‎It was gathered that Abuul, who went missing about two weeks ago in Gboko, was killed by his wife.
She allegedly dumped his remains in River Katsina/Ala.

According to Vanguard ,the deceased was declared missing in Gboko two weeks ago after returning from Oju where he lectured at the state owned College of Education.
Narrating the story, a family source said,

“Goddy used to lecture at the College of Education in Oju. He travels weekly from here in Gboko to Oju to lecture, after which he returns to Gboko to spend his weekend with his wife and two children.
“Unfortunately, two weeks ago he returned from Oju and said he was traveling to Katsina/Ala on a private visit, that was the last we heard of him.

“His disappearance was reported to the Police who since then have been combing the entire state in search of him.

“Luckily, just two days ago, the cloth he wore the last day we saw him was found with a young man, who was immediately arrested by the Police in Gboko.
“Upon interrogation, the young man confessed to the Police how the missing lecturer was allegedly killed by his wife in connivance with her siblings.
“His confession triggered the arrest of several persons including the wife of the deceased and mother of his two children and all those mentioned in the saga, by the Police in Gboko, though the matter has been transferred to the Command Headquarters in Makurdi for further investigations.”

Continuing, the source said,

 “already his wife has confessed all she knew about the matter to the Police. We learnt that she alleged that her brothers beat her husband up because he was involved in extra marital affairs, but not with the intention to kill him.

“After killing him, they allegedly dumped his body in River Katsina/Ala and also went ahead to sell his Honda car to an innocent buyer for the sum of N650,000 and of that sum, the wife of the murdered lecturer was given the sum of N400, 000 as her share of the proceed.
“As I speak with you, the Police and local divers are still combing River Katsina/Ala to locate the remains of Goddy (the deceased) but we very much doubt if his remains would be seen, because the fishes must have feasted on it.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu who confirmed the incident said he was yet to get full details of the matter.
Yamu said, “yes I know of the matter but I’m yet to get the full details from the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, because the suspects are yet to arrive Makurdi. At this moment I cannot confirm that the wife of the deceased was behind his murder until the details are made available to me.”

FG, Niger Delta Militants Agree to 30-day Ceasefire

The federal government and militant groups in the Niger Delta, including the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), which has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on oil and gas installations in recent months, have agreed to a 30-day truce to give President Muhammadu Buhari time to come up with a comprehensive plan for the oil-rich region, investigations by THISDAY have revealed.

The “30 days of quiet” was said to have been agreed upon last week by a federal government team led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, and representatives of the militant groups, community leaders and the state governments.

According to a source who opened up on the 30-day period of truce, Kachikwu was said to have reached out to the militants through back channels and pleaded for some time for the Buhari administration to come up with a comprehensive Niger Delta plan that would address most of their demands.

The militant groups, the source said, accepted Kachikwu’s plea, adding that since the agreement was reached there had been no attacks on oil and gas installations in the oil-rich region.

“You would have noticed that there have been no bombings of oil assets in recent days. This is the fall out of the 30 days of quiet reached with the minister and his team.

“This will give the president time to come up with a comprehensive plan for the Niger Delta,” the source informed THISDAY.

Man bathes policeman with hot soup in Lagos(Graphic photo)

An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 33-year-old man, Imole Emmanuel, in prison custody for allegedly pouring hot soup on a police corporal, Kayode Akingbade.

 Emmanuel was arraigned on counts of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of the public peace.

 It was learnt that he also attempted to snatch the corporal’s rifle.

A team of policemen was said to be on surveillance around the Baptist College, Ilawe Road, when one of them asked the suspect to leave the area in order for them to carry out their operation.

 Akingbade was said to have gone to a canteen to eat about 30 minutes later only for the suspect to trace him there and pour hot soup on him.

 At the sitting held on Monday, the police prosecutor, Bankole Olasunkanmi, prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

 Moving a bail application, the defence counsel, Gbenga Alabadan, urged the court to grant the accused person bail, saying that he remained innocent until the contrary was proved in court.

 But the Chief Magistrate, Idowu Ayenimo, said the defence did not justify the bail application.

 Ayenimo thereafter ordered the defence to approach the court with a written bail application for the accused.

 He ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till July 7.

19-yr-old girl commits suicide in Lagos after fight with boyfriend

Tragedy struck at Alhaji Ede Avenue in Igando area of Lagos, after a 19-year-old lady allegedly committed suicide following a quarrel with her lover. The deceased, Uche Obiora, was said to have visited her lover’s home over the weekend. There were, however, different accounts as to how the tragedy struck. A version of the account said a quarrel ensued between them, over suspicion by Obiora that her boyfriend, Ernest Ihaza, was having an affair with another lady. Another version stated that during the visit, Ihaza announced his intention to discontinue with the relationship. During the verbal confrontation between them, Ihaza was said to have stormed out of his apartment. However on arrival, he reportedly met Obiora writhing in pains on the floor holding on to her stomach. Obiora, who later reported the case at the Igando Police Division, disclosed that Obiora drank poison. Contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, said: “Ernest Ihaza reported at the Igando Police Station that his girlfriend, Uche Obiora, committed suicide by drinking snipers insecticide. We are investigating the matter.”

4 terrorists killed as troops carry out Boko Haram terrorist clearance operations(Photos)

Troops of 114 Task Force Battalion of 28 Task Force Brigade in conjunction with members of vigilante group in an effort to keep the road open and secure, on Sunday 19th June 2016, carried out a clearance operation along Bitta-Damboa axis.

The troops carried out clearance patrol from Bitta up to Junction point at Gambori village, Borno State. During the operation, the troops encountered Boko Haram terrorists at Bulajani village and successfully cleared and pursued the fleeing Boko Haram terrorists in the area.

Unfortunately, the troops ran into an ambush which was eventually cleared enroute back from the pursuit.
Unfortunately, 5 soldiers were wounded in the process and their Buffalo vehicle was badly damaged. The troops killed 4 Boko Haram terrorists, while an unconfirmed number escaped with gun shot wounds.

The patrol recovered 6 bicycles and food storage facility laden with foodstuffs. They also discovered and safely detonated 1 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Madube village.
The wounded soldiers have been evacuated to 23 Brigade medical facility in Yola for further treatment.

A man has been arrested after he slapped his wife to death in Owerri. Trouble began when 36 year old Anele’s wife, 32-year-old Chikodi, asked him to give her son from an earlier marriage, N100 to take to school.He told the Sunday Sun

“I got married to my late wife Chikodi Anele over four years ago. She had a son for another man before we got married. We have been living together in peace. We have two children. Our first child, a girl, is four years old while the second child is a boy, who is just one year old.”

 “On May 31, 2016, I went to my church, Jesus Disciples Fellowship, where we had a vigil. I came back around 5: 30 am and started playing Christian music. My wife came to where I was and said that I should give my stepson N100 naira to go to school. I told her that I had no money with me.

“You see, my late wife was hypertensive; she became very an­gry that I did not give my stepson N100. She started to insult me. I got angry and slapped her.

She slapped me in return. I was shocked by her effrontery and slapped her a second time. She fell down and fainted.

“I rushed her to City Hospital, Nekede. On getting there, the doc­tor checked her and confirmed that she was dead. I went to the nearby police station at Umuguma and reported the matter to the police and they arrested me,” he said.

Promptly, the case was trans­ferred from Umuguma Police Station to State Criminal Investiga­tion Department, Owerri, the Imo State capital, where he has been in detention as investigation into the matter was in progress.

The officer-in-charge of the ho­micide section of the SCID, Supol Innocent Obi, further revealed that family members of the deceased had not yet been to the police to know the state of the matter. He stated that Anele had not yet informed them.

Fr.Mbaka-Buhari's people not picking my calls to hear the vision I had concerning his life

Fiery cleric and the Spiritual Director, ‎Adoration Ministry, Enugu Nigeria, AMEN, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has disclosed of his recent vision concerning President Muhammadu Buhari’s ailment. ‎Mbaka, who made the revelation in one of his Adoration programmes, stated that several efforts he made to reach people close to Buhari over the vision had remained unsuccessful as they refused picking his calls.

On Buhari’s ailment, he declared that his chances of recovery may be slim but that with the prayer of the members of the congregation, he would receive healing.

He equally declared that there were some people who were not happy that Buhari was alive.

“Such people hate everything about the President”

According to him, in the vision, the President was critically sick and was being flown abroad for treatment.

“His health was in a bad shape and he was asking that (Fr Mbaka) should pray for him. None among the people I have called, picked my calls.
“People think I speak with Buhari everyday. When people climb into power, they are dazed. It is a long dream. Our job is to pray for him but there are things that he must do and there is no way to communicate it to him”, Fr. Mbaka said.

He, therefore, asked the congregation to stand up and lift their hands up as he began to pray for the health and healing of President Buhari.Nigerians are expecting the President, who has been away on a medical vacation, back to the country, today (Sunday).

New militant group emerges in Rivers,gives oil firms 14 days to relocate

Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government began talks with members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to end attacks on oil facilities, a new militant group, the Ekpeye Liberation Group (ELG), yesterday emerged in Rivers State and gave multinational companies 14-day ultimatum to relocate.The Nation reports.

The affected multinationals include Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company Limited (NLNG), Total Exploration and Production (E&P) and the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources (NDPR).

The militant group, which consists of ex-militants and freedom agitators, also claimed responsibility for explosion at NAOC’s well 5 in Akara Olu community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It asked the Federal Government and multinationals to expect more attacks and explosions at the expiration of the ultimatum.

Nigerian doctor convicted for fraud in UK,banned from practice(Photo)

A Nigerian gynecologist Dr Anthony Madu, 45, has been asked to repay £75,620.73 within six months or go to prison.This came after it was discovered he secretly carried out well-paid job while on paid sick leave from another hospital. The Nigerian-born Madu doctor was convicted of six charges of fraud and given a two-year suspended sentence in 2014. Dailymail reports that, Madu was given an obstetrics and gynaecology registrar post at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, in August 2009 but he was suspended and put on extended leave two months later over allegations about his conduct towards other staff and claims that he had falsified his training record.From January 2010, he submitted sick notes on three occasions, saying he could not work because of stress. But he then went on to earn huge sums as a locum at four hospitals in Manchester, Yorkshire and the Midlands. The prosecutor, Christian Jowett told Cardiff Crown Court that Madu, now living in Woolwich, London, transferred £95,000 to a bank account in Nigeria. Mr Jowett said: ‘He was legally obliged to tell his employers about his work but he did not. ‘He was also legally obliged to tell two locum agencies he was on extended leave and had been granted sickness leave. But he continued to work and receive payment.’ Judge David Wynn Morgan said Madu will never be able to practise medicine in the UK again. After the hearing, Cheryl Hill, a counter-fraud specialist for the NHS, said: ‘This is a very satisfactory outcome. ‘Dr Anthony Madu defrauded the NHS of money which should have been spent on patient care.’

Police dismiss cop for collecting N50,000 bribe(Photo)

A police sergeant, Daniel Osaimayu, has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly collecting N50,000 bribe from motorists in the Oshodi area of Lagos State.

 Our correspondent gathered that Osaimayu, who was attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Alausa, was arrested on Monday by the X-Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.

 Punch learnt that the X-Squad operatives had arrested a hoodlum in the area and found the cash on him.

The hoodlum, however, fingered the police sergeant, who was posted to the area, as his accomplice.

 The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the dismissal on Wednesday, said four other policemen were dismissed for extortion and improper dressing.

Our correspondent gathered that the four dismissed policemen were Samuel Ando, Michael Adeoya, Richard Ugwu and Sulaiman Muhammed.

 It was learnt that Adeoya was dismissed for allegedly wearing flip-flops while on duty, while Muhammed was dismissed for allegedly not wearing police uniform while on duty.

 Speaking with PUNCH Metro while being paraded, Osaimayu, who was dismissed for bribe, said the money was received from motorists in the area and kept with the hoodlum.

The ex-policeman, who denied that the money was collected in his name, begged the CP to reverse the dismissal as he had no means to feed his family.

 He said, “I was at my duty post on Monday in the Oshodi area when the X-Squad operatives came to arrest me. It was around 10am. A hoodlum had earlier been arrested and searched, and the money was found on him. The suspect confessed it was the money obtained from motorists and he said I authorised him to do it.

“I did not know he collected any money on my behalf. I was whisked off to the command headquarters, Ikeja. They searched me, but no money was found on me. The CP should reconsider me. I have family members to cater to.”

 Adeoya, who was arrested for wearing flip-flops, denied that he was on duty at that time, adding that he went to the Mile 12 Market to buy food supplements for his fowls.

 He said, “I boarded a tricycle to the Mile 12 area. As I alighted, the X-Squad officials swooped on me and said I was improperly dressed. But I was not on duty. I worked as a guard to a chairman of a political party in the Kosofe area.

 “As of the time of my arrest, I was going to the market to buy food supplements for my fowls. I rear fowls in my house. I was surprised that I was arrested. After I was interrogated, they said I would be tried for improper dressing. There is nobody to feed my fowls. They would have all died by now.”

 Another suspect, Muhammed, who was attached to the Idimu Police Division, while pleading for mercy, said he had a health challenge and was going to treat himself when he was arrested.

He said, “I was on night duty at a politician’s house in Idimu. I had an asthmatic attack and I was going to get my inhaler. Someone gave me a ride to Idimu. I was going to the police station when they arrested me for improper dressing. I am not into extortion. I was dealing with my health challenge.”

Homeless mother caught dumping baby at Lagos orphanage after lover fled

A young lady who attempted to dump her 27-day-old baby in front of an orphanage in Magodo area has blamed the harsh economy in the country for her action.
Some residents and traders in the area had reportedly around 9.00 a.m. on Sunday drawn the attention of officers of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to the lady and her baby.

It was gathered that the lady, who was about dropping the baby along CMD Road, was arrested and taken to the RRS office in Magodo.

The suspect, Serah Jegede, a native of Imesi Ile in Osun State, reportedly went to the orphanage home with the intention of handing over her baby to somebody there.She could, however, not hand over the baby to the officials, since it was a Sunday and the senior officials of the orphanage were not around.
According to her, she could no longer take care of the baby due to her environment and lack of money.
When questioned about her background, she said

“I came to Lagos in 2009. I lived with my mother at No.1, Ejo Street, Igando.
“It was my mother that used to pay the house rent. One day, we didn’t just see her again. She didn’t come back home.“She didn’t leave home with anything; all her things are still there. I don’t know her  whereabouts. But when the rent expired, I had no choice but to leave the house. That was over a year ago. I live inside market, just any space to sleep.”

On who was responsible for the pregnancy, Serah said:

“I only know him as Sunday. I don’t know his surname. I don’t know his parents.”

She said the man abandoned her and ran away when the pregnancy was five months.

“I don’t know his whereabouts too. That day, I went to sell pure water. Before I came back, he had packed all his belongings and disappeared, leaving me behind. I gave birth to my baby at Ikotun market,” she said.

Serah also told the RRS operatives that the baby was yet to be christened, since she had no intention of keeping her.
A source around CMD Road, who pleaded anonymity, told Lagos Metro that

 “it was actually a kid that suspected that the lady wanted to dump the baby.
“The kid told a woman who in turn informed the RRS operatives, who rescued the baby and arrested the mother,” the source said.

At the RRS office, succour came the way of the lady and her daughter as policemen and women, led by the commander, Olatunji Disu, showered them with gifts and money.
The lady and her baby were later transferred to the Isheri divisional police station.

NLC set to shut six banks for sacking workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday threatened to shut the six banks that sacked their workers.  The umbrella union gave the affected banks two weeks’ ultimatum to recall the sacked workers and allow unionisation.

NLC, in a letter to the management of the banks, which was signed by its Deputy General Secretary, Chris Uyot, said it would be forced to close the banks and their branches, if they failed to recall the affected workers.

The affected banks are: Fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, First City Monument Bank, First Bank, Ecobank and Skye Bank.
