David Faramola Oniya died during a friendly match in Malaysia |
Nigerian defender David Faramola Oniya, 30-year-old, was confirmed dead after he slumped during a friendly match on Saturday, June 13 in Malaysia. The tragic incident occurred during a friendly between his Malaysian club, T-Team, and Kelantan when he collapsed just three minutes into the game. He was taken to the hospital were he was confirmed dead.
The friendly was called off after 60 minutes after the hospital confirmed his death. T-Team club’s chief executive, Syahrizan Mohd Zain, has blamed slow response from the medical team for the death of the Nigerian defender.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story,” this he told the New Straits Times.
“Our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.”
The Nigerian defender recently joined the Malaysian club this season after spells in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
