DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF FALSE JOURNALISM

  The endeavor to maintain proper standard of fairness in journalism must be pursed.  It is fatally easy for the journalist to deviate from the straight path while writing a report.  There is this natural desire to make a story and insidious temptation to twist facts to square with his paper's policy.  Both are as indefensible as the framing of misleading headlines for the sake of effect;

MATERIALISM, AN AGENT OF CORRUPTION IN THE SOCEITY

  The desire to get rich quick, geed, insatiable love for materialism, power tussle and social malaise have almost caught up with every Nigerian.  That is to say, the love of money is the root of all evils.  Man and woman, young and old have new dimension of corrupt indulgence on daily basis.
  The main causes of corrupt practices are greed and insatiable love for materialism.  Everybody wants to own and ride exotic cars at all cost.  Every citizen wants to own as many houses as possible.  Nowadays, it is very possible to hear people boast of having many chieftaincy titles and degrees, designer shoes, dresses and bags that are now in vogue.  These endless desires lead to different forms of moral decadence in our society.  Corrupt practices are further fuelled by power-hungry politicians and military personnel who spend huge sums of money to acquire political power.  Such money are gotten either by embezzlement of public funds or an other fundamental means.
  Another cause of this social malaise is traceable to societal value system in which diligence, honesty, honour, and integrity are no longer accorded the respect they deserve.  Material fortune speaks louder than such virtues of these days.  Who doesn't know the high rate of corruption in offices and public places?  The dimension and language attached to it is: 'settlement', 'see me', and 'Egunje', which are popularly used.  Bribery and corruption have eaten deep the marrow of our society.  The practice is now integrated into the normal way of life and is regarded as 'fastness'.  The evil of materialism brought about the fast declining state of our economy and limited opportunities for the poor masses.
  However, to alleviate the problem of social ills, all hands must be on deck.  There must be total overhaulting from those at the top.  Our leaders must learn to lead by example.  It is not enough for them to condemn corruption on pages of newspaper and not show good examples.  Secondly, if we have the fear of God, honesty, hardwork, and the love of our country, we shall succeed.  In addition, law enforcement agents must sit up against bribery and corruption.  Above all, we must all discipline ourselves to live within our means and not to allow frenzy to be rich to overwhelm us.

'OBITUARY WRITING', NEW REVENUE GENERATION SOURCE FOR GOVERNMENT

  One of the area which Nigeria is missing a lot of revenue generation is 'writing obituaries'.  A lot of Nigerians have a God given talent in writing exclusive obituary articles.  One suspects that the reason why some of our newspapers still manage to break even is because of the great amount of revenue they derive from obituaries.  It is not unusual for about one quarter the volume of an average daily to be constituted of obituaries and in memoria alone.
  One possible explanation for this, it has been argued, is that Nigerians values their dead greatly.  There is a popular saying that 'you do not say evil things against the dead'.  This is clearly the philosophy behind the honor which is been bestowed on the dead.
  From the evidence of these obituaries and in memeoriam, every dead Nigerian must have been something of a saint while alive. This would clearly explain why the death of most Nigerians are  attributed to the evil machinations of the wicked/enemies.  This may be funny, but only a few people in our country die naturally, and even when they do, the obituaries always give impressions that such death constitute the saddest loss to befall the family of the deceased.
  That is why writers of these obituaries and their allied advertisements are experts on 'mortuary stylistics'.  This 'mortuary stylistics,' the study in the art of eulogizing the dead and making their loss sound so heart breaking, is one of the commodities we can export to other countries.  We can really make big out of this, only if the government would place a value to writing obituaries.
  To me, this is a source of reducing the rate of unemployment in the society.  The talents of some writers are wasting, and this can be a medium of reviving such talents.

GMB VS GEJ --- THE BATTLE FOR TRUE DEMOCRACY

  It is quiet obvious that the two political gladiators in Nigeria,GMB (General Muhammadu Buhari) and GEJ (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan) would be having their finally battle for true democracy on March 28th 2015.
  GEJ being the defending champion,has been preparing seriously for the clash against the former champion (in 1985),GMB.  GMB has lost three consecutive finals after the title was taken from him by IBB.  He lost to OBJ (2003),UMY (Umaru Musa Yar'Adua,late,2007) and GEJ (2011).  GMB was inflicted with serious injury,as GEJ gave him a super finishing smackdown in the 2011 battle against GEJ, after which he cried and vowed never to contest for the championship again( the injury must have been so serious. Thank God for his life).
