Not less than 42 people died in a horror crash in France

At least 42 people died today after a collision between a coach and a lorry in south west France.

The horrific accident happened shortly after 7.30am close to Libourne, in the Gironde department, on the D17 road.

There were 49 people on board the coach, which was carrying pensioners on holiday.

Both vehicles burst into flames, and are believed to have been speeding, according to witnesses. About 60 firefighters are now on the scene.

The coach involved was full of pensioners on a trip and the emergency services said only five people survived.

The identities of those who died is not yet known.

The area is now full of emergency service vehicles and investigators are racing to the scene.

The area around the accident site is now completely closed.

French President Francois Hollande has already spoke out about the tragic crash.

He said: “The French government is fully mobilised on this terrible tragedy.”

Puisseguin’s mayor Xavier Sublett also told of his devastation, telling France Bleu Gironde: “We are overcome with emotion.”
